NordVPN vs Surfshark comes down to one trade. NordVPN has the longer independent audit record: six reviews of its no-logs policy, against Surfshark’s two. Surfshark has no device limit, puts an ad blocker in its cheapest plan, runs every server on RAM only, and publishes its server count. Both are strong VPNs. The right one depends on which of those things you care about more.

Short answer: choose NordVPN if a long, independent audit record is your first criterion, or if you want a Dedicated IP included in a plan. Choose Surfshark if you have more than 10 devices, or want ad blocking without paying for a bigger plan.

The common mistake in NordVPN vs Surfshark comparisons

Most comparisons open with speed charts. Don’t trust those blindly, and be careful with any table that crowns a winner by a few megabits, because the gap between two good VPNs on a given evening is usually smaller than the gap between your own Wi-Fi on a quiet morning and a busy night. Unless a review tells you where, when and how it measured, a speed number tells you about one connection on one day, not about your connection next month. We haven’t run speed tests, so we don’t publish speed claims.

What doesn’t change from day to day is what each company publishes and commits to: how many independent reviews have checked its no-logs claim, how many devices one account covers, what’s in the cheapest plan, and what the servers keep. Those are the things that decide this choice, and they’re the things we compare.

The four things that decide it

  1. How much weight you put on audits. NordVPN: six independent reviews, PwC in 2018 and 2020, then Deloitte through 2025. Surfshark: two Deloitte reviews, the latest published in June 2025.
  2. How many devices you have. NordVPN: 10 at once. Surfshark: unlimited.
  3. Whether you want ad blocking in the cheapest plan. Surfshark Starter includes an ad blocker. NordVPN’s ad and tracker blocker starts at Complete.
  4. Whether you need a Dedicated IP. NordVPN includes one in Complete Max. Surfshark sells it as an add-on, in 20 locations.

NordVPN: the audit record

Best for: people who choose a VPN on evidence of its privacy claim.

Sweet spot: travel, public Wi-Fi and streaming on up to 10 devices, with a long audit history behind it.

Strengths:

  • Six independent no-logs reviews, per its no-log page, from 2018 to 2025.
  • NordWhisper, a protocol built for networks that block VPNs.
  • A Dedicated IP included in its top plan, Complete Max.

Weaknesses:

  • Ten devices per account, not unlimited.
  • The ad and tracker blocker isn’t in Basic.
  • No exact server count published; it says “thousands” across 225 locations.

Surfshark: no device limit

Best for: households with more devices than a cap allows.

Sweet spot: a family that wants every gadget covered and ads blocked, on the cheapest plan.

Strengths:

  • Unlimited devices on every plan.
  • An ad blocker and cookie pop-up blocker in Starter, plus Dynamic MultiHop and Rotating IP.
  • RAM-only servers, and a published network size: 4500+ servers in 100 countries.

Weaknesses:

  • Two independent no-logs reviews, against NordVPN’s six.
  • A Dedicated IP costs extra.
  • Antivirus and scam protection start at One.

The verdict

NordVPN is the better pick for people who choose a VPN on its privacy evidence, because six independent no-logs reviews is the longest record of the two. However, if you have more than 10 devices, or want an ad blocker in the cheapest plan, Surfshark is the right choice.

That’s the honest version, and it gives Surfshark real wins. On devices, on the cheapest plan’s ad blocker, on RAM-only servers and on publishing its network size, Surfshark is ahead. NordVPN’s lead is the audit record, plus NordWhisper and the included Dedicated IP. We rank NordVPN above Surfshark because, for a privacy product, an outside auditor checking the core promise six times is the strongest evidence either company offers. If that matters less to you than your device count, don’t let our ranking overrule your household.

When the answer flips

  • If you have more than 10 devices, Surfshark, full stop. No NordVPN plan removes the cap.
  • If ad blocking is half the reason you want a VPN and you don’t want a bigger plan, Surfshark’s Starter does it.
  • If you need a Dedicated IP, NordVPN’s Complete Max includes one; Surfshark charges extra.
  • If you’re often on networks that block VPNs, NordVPN’s NordWhisper gives you one more way through, alongside obfuscated servers on both.
  • If you prefer an EU-based company, Surfshark is registered in the Netherlands; NordVPN is based in Panama.

Three buyers, three answers

A privacy-first freelancer with a laptop and a phone. Two devices, sensitive client work, lots of café Wi-Fi. The device limit doesn’t matter. The audit record does. NordVPN fits, and NordWhisper helps on the hotel and café networks that block VPNs.

A family of five with a house full of gadgets. Phones, laptops, a console, two TVs and a tablet. That’s over 10 devices before anyone gets a smartwatch. Surfshark’s unlimited devices make the choice for you, and the ad blocker in Starter is a bonus.

Someone who banks from abroad and keeps getting flagged. A shared VPN address can trigger bank security checks. A Dedicated IP helps. NordVPN includes one in Complete Max; Surfshark sells it separately. Compare the totals for your case.

It turns out the deciding question is rarely “which is better?” It’s “what’s in my house, and what do I want proven?” When you answer those two honestly, the choice usually makes itself.

What neither one promises

Honestly, this is the section most comparisons skip.

Neither makes you anonymous. A VPN hides your traffic from your network and your internet provider, and moves your visible IP address. It doesn’t stop you logging in to accounts that know exactly who you are. When you sign in to your email over a VPN, your email provider still knows it’s you.

Neither guarantees a streaming service will work. Streaming platforms block VPN addresses when they can, and that changes over time. Don’t buy either one on the promise of a specific catalogue. Use the 30-day window to try the services you actually watch.

Neither audit covers the future. An assurance report checks the systems at the time of the review. That’s why the number of reviews over the years matters: a record of repeated checks says more than a single one. It’s also why Surfshark’s two and NordVPN’s six are worth comparing at all.

Neither price lasts forever. Both sell intro prices on a 2-year term. When you buy, don’t forget the renewal date, because that’s when the real long-term cost shows up.

Most people miss these four points until something goes wrong. Knowing them makes either VPN a better buy.

A two-minute way to choose

Answer these in order, and stop at the first yes.

  1. Do you have more than 10 devices? Surfshark.
  2. Is an independent audit record your first criterion? NordVPN.
  3. Do you want an ad blocker without upgrading your plan? Surfshark.
  4. Do you need a Dedicated IP included? NordVPN.
  5. Still undecided? Use each one’s 30-day money-back window on your own devices, apps and networks.

Use the refund windows

Both give you 30 days. That’s the most useful test there is, because it runs on your devices, your streaming apps, your bank and your networks rather than on a reviewer’s. Install the one you lean towards everywhere you’d use it, try a hard network once, and decide before day 30. If it doesn’t fit, ask for the refund and try the other.

How we checked

We don’t claim tests we didn’t run. We read NordVPN’s pricing, no-log, server and download pages and Surfshark’s pricing page, server page and June 2025 Deloitte post on 29 October 2026, and quoted them where it matters. Our scores weigh privacy, security features, network, apps and value on what each VPN publishes. More VPNs are in our VPN section.

FAQ: NordVPN vs Surfshark

Is NordVPN or Surfshark better?

NordVPN has the longer independent audit record, six no-logs reviews to Surfshark’s two, and we rank it first for that. Surfshark is better if you have more than 10 devices or want an ad blocker in the cheapest plan.

Which has more servers, NordVPN or Surfshark?

Surfshark publishes 4500+ servers in 100 countries. NordVPN says “thousands” of servers across 225 locations and doesn’t publish a total, so a like-for-like count isn’t possible.
