To cancel a VPN and get a refund, contact the provider’s support (usually live chat) inside its money-back window and ask for the refund, then turn off auto-renewal in your account so you aren’t charged again. NordVPN, Proton VPN, Surfshark and ExpressVPN give 30 days; PureVPN gives 31. Every one of them covers only your first purchase, not a renewal. If you paid through the Apple App Store, the refund is Apple’s decision, not the VPN’s.

Cancelling and refunding are two different things
Most people miss this. Turning off auto-renewal does not give you money back. It only stops the next charge. Nothing more.
Surfshark’s cancellation article says it in one line: “Refunds are not provided for the unused part of an active subscription period.” Cancel on day 400 of a two-year plan and you keep the service until the end of the term, but you don’t get the unused months back. PureVPN’s cancel guide is the same: once you cancel, “you will not be charged any further.” That’s all it promises. No cash.
A refund is a separate request. You ask support for it, inside the window, and the provider checks whether you qualify. So when you want your money back, you usually do two things: request the refund, and turn off renewal. Don’t forget the second one. Many people forget it. Some providers close the account when they refund it; others leave the renewal switch where it was.
The five refund policies side by side
| Provider | Window | Covers | Not covered | How to ask |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | 30 days | First subscription purchase | Renewals (unless local law says otherwise); Apple App Store payments | Live chat, then the Refund button in billing history |
| Proton VPN | 30 days | Direct subscriptions, once per user | Cash and bank transfer payments; third-party purchases follow that party’s policy | Customer support, cancellation and request both inside 30 days |
| Surfshark | 30 days | First purchase, direct or via Paddle, Google Play or Cleverbridge | Renewed or already-refunded subscriptions; some add-ons; Apple and Amazon purchases go to those stores | Live chat |
| ExpressVPN | 30 days | First-time users, including a dedicated IP add-on | Anyone refunded before; Apple App Store and Google Play in-app purchases | Live chat |
| PureVPN | 31 days | Initial purchase | Renewals; trial renewals; Coinpayment, Google Play and Apple App Store payments; special accounts | Email help@purevpn.com, or live chat |
The detail behind each row is below, with the page it came from. When you read them closely, the windows look alike and the exclusions don’t.
NordVPN refund policy
NordVPN’s refund policy article offers a 30-day money-back guarantee “for new subscriptions.” The key condition is that it covers only the initial purchase. Once a subscription renews, it’s generally no longer refundable under the policy, unless local laws require otherwise.
The process is mostly automatic. Mostly. You start a live chat, open the verification link support sends you, and then click Refund next to the eligible payment in your billing history. You pick a reason, confirm, and the status moves from “Refund Processing” to “Refunded.” NordVPN says the money can take up to 10 business days to reach you, depending on how you paid. Don’t panic if there’s no Refund button. It means the payment is either older than 30 days, already refunded, or a renewal.
Where you paid matters. A lot. NordVPN says it is “unable to issue refunds for payments made through the Apple App Store,” so those go to Apple. Google Play payments can be refunded by NordVPN within the policy, or by Google directly within 48 hours. Amazon Appstore buyers go to Amazon, and anyone who bought from a shop or reseller goes back to that seller.
To turn off renewal, NordVPN’s cancellation article gives five steps: log in to your Nord Account, open the Billing tab, click Cancel next to auto-renewal, select Cancel auto-renewal, and check the status now reads off. You’ll get a confirmation email. Our NordVPN review explains why that renewal date matters so much: the renewal price is far higher than the intro price.
Proton VPN refund policy
Proton’s terms of service, section 9, are the clearest of the five on timing: “You may cancel your subscription within 30 days of the initial purchase and receive a full refund for the Service.” Then the catch: “the cancellation and the request for refund must both be addressed within the 30-day period.” Cancel on day 29 and ask on day 32, and you’re out. Simple as that.
Other conditions from the same terms: refunds “can only be requested once per user,” apply only to people who subscribed to Proton directly, go back “to the original payment method” in the original currency, and are processed within 30 days of the request. Cash and bank transfer payments aren’t refundable. Past 30 days, the service is non-refundable, though Proton may give credit at its discretion.
Proton’s cancellation guide gives the steps. Sign in at account.protonvpn.com, select Subscription in the sidebar, scroll to Cancel subscription and click Continue, confirm, then pick a reason and click Submit. Proton warns that “your cancellation will not be finalized” until you submit that reason. Don’t skip it. You keep paid features until the renewal date, then the account drops to Proton Free. The same page lists typical refund times: 5-10 business days for cards, 1-2 working days for PayPal and Bitcoin.
Surfshark refund policy
Surfshark’s refund policy article says you’re “eligible for a full refund within 30 days of your first purchase.” It covers purchases made directly from Surfshark or through an eligible reseller: Paddle, Google Play or Cleverbridge. It applies only to the first subscription purchase, so a subscription that has already been refunded or has renewed doesn’t qualify. Some add-ons, such as an anonymous Dedicated IP or Alternative ID, aren’t refundable.
You ask through live chat. When you do, have your account email ready. Apple purchases are refunded by Apple and Amazon purchases by Amazon. For Google Play, Surfshark says you can ask Google Play Support within 48 hours of buying, and Surfshark’s own support after that.
To stop renewal: log in, click your email address in the top-right corner, choose Subscription, open Payments, then click Cancel auto-renewal and confirm. If you can’t see the option, the subscription was probably bought through an app store. Check your phone.
ExpressVPN refund policy
ExpressVPN’s refund policy page is the strictest about who qualifies. Read it twice. Its guarantee “is for first-time users only,” and “users who have previously received a refund are ineligible.” Eligible users get “a guaranteed 30 days from the moment you buy your subscription,” and the window also covers a dedicated IP add-on bought with it.
The app-store rule is broader than at the other four. Subscriptions billed as in-app purchases through Google Play or the Apple App Store “do not have access to the ExpressVPN 30-day money-back guarantee.” Those refunds are at the discretion of Google Play Support or Apple Support. You request a direct refund by chatting with ExpressVPN support.
ExpressVPN’s cancellation guide says to go to My subscription in your account portal and click Cancel subscription under Automatic renewal. You keep using the service until the last day of the current cycle. Bitcoin and Paymentwall payments don’t renew automatically, so there’s nothing to switch off. Easy.
PureVPN refund policy
PureVPN’s refund policy gives one extra day. In practice, that day rarely decides anything, but it’s there: you “can claim a refund within 31 days of your initial purchase.” It’s also the most specific about exclusions. “The 31-day refund policy does not apply to renewal payments,” and “trial-based renewals are non-refundable.” It names Coinpayment, Google Play Store and Apple App Store as payment methods that “do not support the refund option,” and excludes accounts issued for special purposes.
To ask, email help@purevpn.com with your VPN username and the reason. Its money-back page adds live chat as an option. PureVPN says it will first try to fix your issue, then processes a valid refund within 24 hours, though the money can take up to 30 days to appear depending on your bank or card. Our PureVPN review covers its longer plans, where the renewal rule matters most.
When you want to stop renewal, log in to the Member Area, open Subscriptions, click the drop-down arrow and choose Cancel Subscription, then give a reason.
Bought it in an app store? Apple and Google decide
If you’ve paid through your phone’s app store, the store holds your money, not the VPN. Different rules apply. Honestly, this is where most refund requests go wrong.
Apple. Apple’s refund page says to sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com, choose “I’d like to,” then “Request a refund,” pick a reason, select the subscription and submit. Apple says some purchases “might be eligible,” eligibility varies by country, and you should expect an update within 24 to 48 hours. There’s no fixed 30-day promise here. None. To stop renewal on an iPhone, Apple’s cancel guide says: Settings, tap your name, Subscriptions, tap the subscription, Cancel Subscription. Proton’s advice fits every VPN: cancel in the App Store first, then request the refund from Apple.
Google Play. Google’s refund page says that if more than 48 hours have passed since you bought, you should contact the app’s developer. Within 48 hours, you can ask Google at play.google.com: Payments & subscriptions, Budget & order history, then Report a problem on the order. Google says a decision usually takes a day but can take up to four. Its subscription page confirms that cancelling keeps your access “for the time you’ve already paid,” and that uninstalling the app does not cancel anything.
A worked example: day 23 versus month 27
Day 23. Picture this. Someone buys a two-year Surfshark plan on the website on 5 October 2026 for a remote-work trip. By 28 October they’ve found their company already provides a VPN. That’s day 23, inside the 30-day window, and it’s their first Surfshark purchase. They open live chat, ask for the refund, and then switch off auto-renewal under Payments so nothing restarts. Clean. Done in ten minutes.
Month 27. Someone else bought a two-year NordVPN plan on 1 August 2024. If the intro term covered 27 months, as NordVPN’s two-year plans do today, the renewal falls around 1 November 2026, and it renews at a much higher yearly price. If they notice the charge on 3 November, it turns out the 30-day guarantee doesn’t help: it applied to the first purchase in 2024, and NordVPN’s policy excludes renewals unless local law requires otherwise. The only fix was to turn off auto-renewal before that date. In practice, that’s the single most expensive mistake people make with VPN subscriptions.
Skip the regret. Put the renewal date in your calendar the day you buy, with a reminder a week earlier.
Common mistakes
Uninstalling the app and assuming that’s cancelling. It isn’t. Google says so outright, and the same is true everywhere. The subscription lives in your account, not on the device.
Waiting until day 30. Don’t do it. Time zones, verification emails and chat queues all eat into a deadline. Aim to ask by day 25. With Proton, remember both the cancellation and the request must land inside the window.
Asking the VPN about an App Store payment. Wrong door. NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark and PureVPN all point Apple purchases to Apple. If you’ve bought on an iPhone and think you might want a refund later, buying direct on the provider’s website keeps the provider’s guarantee in play.
Expecting a second refund. Proton allows one per user, full stop. ExpressVPN excludes anyone refunded before. Surfshark and NordVPN cover the first purchase only. The guarantee is a one-time trial of the service, not a rolling right. When you treat it as a trial, honestly, it does its job well. If you’re still deciding whether you need a VPN at all, read is a VPN worth it before you buy.
FAQ: VPN refund and cancellation questions
Does cancelling a VPN automatically refund me?
No. Cancelling turns off auto-renewal so you aren’t charged again. A refund is a separate request to support, and Surfshark states plainly that unused time in an active period isn’t refunded.
Can I get a refund after my VPN renews?
Usually not under the money-back guarantee. NordVPN, Surfshark and PureVPN all exclude renewals in their own policies, and NordVPN adds an exception where local law requires otherwise. If a renewal charge surprises you, contact support anyway and ask what your local rules allow.
What is NordVPN’s refund policy?
A 30-day money-back guarantee for new subscriptions, covering the initial purchase only. You request it through live chat and the Refund button in your billing history. Apple App Store payments must be refunded by Apple.
How long does a VPN refund take?
It depends on the provider and payment method. NordVPN says up to 10 business days, Proton lists 5-10 business days for cards, and PureVPN says it processes within 24 hours but the money can take up to 30 days to appear.
The short version
- Refunding and cancelling are separate: ask support for the refund, then turn off auto-renewal.
- NordVPN, Proton VPN, Surfshark and ExpressVPN give 30 days; PureVPN gives 31. All cover the first purchase only.
- Renewals aren’t covered, so the renewal date is the one to put in your calendar.
- App Store purchases are refunded by Apple; Google Play depends on the 48-hour rule and the VPN’s own policy.
- Ask early, by day 25, and keep the confirmation emails.
