NordVPN review: audited privacy, with a renewal catch

NordVPN has had its no-logs policy independently reviewed six times and covers 225 locations. Pick it for privacy you can check. Plan for the renewal price.

Bottom line: NordVPN is the VPN to pick if you want privacy claims you can check. It’s our top VPN pick for one reason you can check: the longest-running record of independent no-logs reviews among the five VPNs we cover, six since 2018. ExpressVPN’s first privacy audit came in 2019, Proton VPN’s in 2022 and Surfshark’s in 2023. It runs servers in 225 locations, and one account covers 10 devices. The catch is cost over time: the cheapest price needs a two-year prepay, and the renewal runs more than three times the intro monthly rate.

Best for: people who want an audited no-logs VPN for travel, streaming and public Wi-Fi, on several devices.

Skip it if: you only need a VPN for a week, or the renewal price would make you cancel anyway.

Updated 29 October 2026. This NordVPN review rests on what NordVPN publishes and what we could check that day: its pricing page, its no-log page, its server and download pages, and its help center. We haven’t run speed tests. So there is no speed score here, and we’d be wary of any review that gives one without showing the test.

What NordVPN does well

Its no-logs claim has outside evidence

Every VPN says it keeps no logs. Few let anyone check.

NordVPN does. Its no-log page says PricewaterhouseCoopers AG Switzerland ran the first two reviews, and Deloitte ran the rest, including one each in 2023, 2024 and 2025. Six in total. For a privacy product, an auditor’s report is worth more than any slogan on the homepage.

One small flag. Lower on the same page, an older paragraph still says “all five independent assurance reports”. The year list and the headline both point to six, so it reads like copy nobody updated. Honestly, it changes nothing about the policy. We note it because a review should catch details like that.

NordVPN is based in Panama, which it describes as having no data retention laws that apply to VPN providers. Jurisdiction alone proves little. Paired with six audits, it adds up.

A protocol for networks that block VPNs

NordLynx is the default, and in practice you never touch it. The interesting one is NordWhisper. NordVPN built it for filtered networks: hotel Wi-Fi, office firewalls, countries that block VPN traffic. When a normal connection fails, you switch to it.

It has limits, and NordVPN says so. Its own NordWhisper post says it doesn’t work with Dedicated IP or Onion Over VPN. If you’ve paid for a Dedicated IP, switch back to NordLynx whenever the network allows it.

One account covers a household

Every plan protects up to 10 devices at once. Two laptops, two phones, a TV stick and a tablet still leave four spare slots.

Specialty servers at no extra cost

  • Double VPN sends your traffic through two servers instead of one.
  • Onion Over VPN reaches the Tor network without the Tor browser.
  • Obfuscated servers hide the fact that you’re on a VPN at all.
  • P2P servers are set aside for file sharing.

All four sit in the app’s “Specialty Servers” list, on every plan.

Where NordVPN falls short

The renewal price

Most people miss this part. The prices on NordVPN’s pricing page are intro prices for a 2-year plan, paid upfront for the first 27 months. After that, each plan renews at a yearly price worth more than three times the intro monthly rate.

It isn’t hidden. The page spells it out next to each plan (“Savings: intro vs. renewal prices”). Still, it’s the number that decides whether NordVPN stays good value in year three.

The fix is boring and it works: when you buy, put the renewal date in your calendar. Then you decide, rather than the auto-renewal.

Basic is a VPN, not the full kit

Basic gives you the VPN, scam and phishing protection, and Dark Web Monitor for five emails. That’s it. The ad and tracker blocker, the antivirus, the password manager and the 1 TB of cloud storage all start at Complete. If blocking ads is half the reason you want a VPN, skip Basic.

Don’t run the app and the extension together

NordVPN’s help center is blunt about it: running the app and the browser extension at the same time causes connection interference. Pick one per device. The app covers everything on the device. The extension covers the browser only.

No exact server count

NordVPN says “thousands” of servers across 225 locations. It never gives a total. You won’t notice in daily use. It does make like-for-like comparisons harder.

Which NordVPN setting for which job

NordVPN’s app has more switches than most people ever use. The right ones depend on where you are and what you’re doing, so here’s the short map, built only from what NordVPN documents.

SituationWhat to useWhy
Everyday browsing at homeNordLynx, “Secure my connection”The default protocol, and the app picks a nearby server for you
Hotel, airport or office Wi-Fi that blocks VPNsNordWhisper, or an obfuscated serverBoth exist to get past filters that stop normal VPN traffic
A country that restricts VPNsObfuscated servers firstThey hide that you’re using a VPN at all
File sharingA P2P serverNordVPN sets these aside for it
Sensitive work or researchDouble VPNYour traffic passes through two servers instead of one
Banking or a work login that keeps asking for checksDedicated IP (Complete Max)A static IP that only you use, with NordWhisper switched off

Two rules sit under that table. First, the faster default is the one to stay on, because the special modes trade some convenience for privacy or reach, and switching back when you’re done costs nothing. Second, the Dedicated IP and NordWhisper never mix: when the network lets you, connect normally with your Dedicated IP, and keep NordWhisper for the networks that block everything else.

Device count decides the plan more often than features do. A single person with a phone and a laptop rarely needs more than Basic. A household that wants ad blocking on every device, a password manager it can share and somewhere to back up files is the buyer Complete was built for, and the price gap between the two plans is small on the 2-year term. Complete Max only earns its higher price if a Dedicated IP solves a real problem for you, like a bank that flags shared VPN addresses.

Who should buy NordVPN

  • You travel on hotel or airport Wi-Fi. NordWhisper and the obfuscated servers exist for networks that block VPNs.
  • You want privacy you can verify. Six independent reviews of the no-logs policy beats most of the market.
  • You protect a household. Ten devices on one account covers most families.
  • You want Tor without the Tor browser. Onion Over VPN does that from the app.

Who should skip it

  • You need a VPN for one short trip. The best price needs a two-year prepay, so a short plan elsewhere can cost less overall.
  • You know you’ll forget the renewal. If year three at full price would make you cancel in anger, plan for it now.
  • You need a Dedicated IP on a filtered network. NordWhisper and Dedicated IP don’t work together.

Use the 30 days: a checklist before you commit

The money-back window is the one free test you get, so use it on the things that matter to you rather than on a speed-test website.

  1. Install it on every device you plan to cover. Phones, laptops, the TV stick. Don’t wait until day 29 to find out a device is awkward.
  2. Try the services you actually use. Your streaming apps, your bank, your work tools. If one of them blocks VPN addresses, that’s when a Dedicated IP or a different server becomes worth it.
  3. Try a hard network. Connect once from a café, hotel or office Wi-Fi. If the normal connection fails, switch to NordWhisper and see whether it gets through.
  4. Check the renewal date and price in your account. Write both down.
  5. Decide before day 30. If anything above failed, ask for the refund in time. NordVPN asks you to contact it within 30 days of buying.

Five checks, a few evenings. You’ll know more from them than from any review, this one included.

How we checked NordVPN

We don’t claim lab tests we didn’t run. For this review we read NordVPN’s pricing, no-log, server and download pages and its help center on 29 October 2026, and we quote them where it matters.

Our five YouTube desks have also published more than 180 NordVPN videos. Each one is built from NordVPN’s own documentation, and it turns out the same few limits come up again and again: the renewal price, NordWhisper’s exceptions, and the app-plus-extension conflict. Those findings shaped the weak spots above. Watch them on the VPN section or the videos page.

Our scores weigh privacy, security features, the server network, the apps and value, judged on what each VPN publishes. How we score explains each one.

FAQ: NordVPN questions

Is NordVPN worth it in 2026?

Yes, if you value audited privacy and use a VPN on several devices. Six independent reviews back its no-logs policy. Value drops at renewal, so it’s worth it when you plan for that price, or cancel before it.

Does NordVPN keep logs?

NordVPN says it doesn’t log your browsing activity. PwC reviewed that claim in 2018 and 2020. Deloitte reviewed it in the years after, most recently in 2025.

How many devices can I use with NordVPN?

Ten at the same time, on every plan.

Can I get a refund from NordVPN?

Yes. Every plan has a 30-day money-back guarantee. Contact NordVPN within 30 days of buying.

Which NordVPN plan should I choose?

Basic if you only want the VPN. Complete if you also want the ad and tracker blocker and the password manager. Complete Max only if you need a Dedicated IP.

The verdict

NordVPN is our top pick in the VPN section and for travel. The reasons are evidence, not adjectives. Six independent no-logs reviews, the first in 2018, the longest record of the five VPNs we cover. A protocol built for blocked networks. Ten devices per account. That’s a strong privacy product.

One rival deserves a straight mention. Proton VPN scores slightly higher on our five criteria, 8.9 to 8.7, thanks to open-source apps, public audit reports and a free plan. If those matter more to you than the length of the audit record, read the Proton VPN review.

Go in knowing the one real cost, the renewal price. Buy the plan that fits your devices, note the renewal date, and when you do, NordVPN is easy to recommend.
