MarkupGo review: count PDFs, not credits

MarkupGo turns HTML, URLs, Markdown and templates into PDFs and images through one API, from $49 once on AppSumo. A PDF costs 3 credits, so Plan 1's 1,000 monthly credits mean about 333 PDFs. What each code adds.

Bottom line: MarkupGo is an API that turns HTML, a URL, Markdown or a saved template into a PDF or an image. Developers call it from code; no-code users call it from Zapier, Make or n8n, or with a “Magic Template URL.” On AppSumo it sells seven plans, $49 to $343 once, each one code more than the last. The number to understand is the credit. The listing’s FAQ says “each PDF conversion uses 3 credits” and each image uses 1, with credits renewing every month. So Plan 1’s 1,000 credits a month are about 333 PDFs, or 1,000 images. Plan 1 also leaves out the Image Transformation API, which starts at 2 codes, and unlimited templates start at 3. The listing is “Not covered by We Got Your Back.”

Best for: developers, SaaS builders and automation agencies who generate invoices, certificates, reports or social images from data.

Think twice if: you need to edit existing PDFs, or you’d rather not touch HTML at all.

Updated 29 October 2026. This MarkupGo review rests on what we read that day: the MarkupGo listing on AppSumo, including all seven plan cards, the deal terms, the FAQ and buyer reviews, and MarkupGo’s own pricing page. We haven’t wired it into an app, so we describe the plans, the credit maths and the terms, not render speed.

What MarkupGo does

Most apps eventually need a PDF: an invoice, a receipt, a course certificate, a report. The usual way is to run a headless browser yourself and fight fonts and page breaks. MarkupGo’s founder describes exactly that frustration in the listing’s story. The product replaces it with an API call. From the listing:

  • Inputs: HTML, “any public URL,” Markdown, or your saved templates.
  • Outputs: PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF.
  • Templates: built in an editor with HTML, CSS and JavaScript, then filled per request with JSON data and Handlebars variables.
  • PDF controls: custom headers, footers, margins and PDF metadata.
  • Office to PDF (beta): converts “130+ document formats like .docx, .xlsx and .pptx.”
  • Image Transformation API: resize, crop and rotate images through query strings.
  • Clients: a REST API and an official Node.js client.
  • No-code: a Magic Template URL that takes your data in query parameters, plus HTTP or webhook steps in Zapier, Make or n8n.

On data, the FAQ says: “We don’t store the HTML or data you send for conversion.” Generated files stay in your account until you delete them, and you can set an expiration on outputs.

The credit maths

Here’s the part most people skip. The plan cards show credits, but you’ll plan in documents. Using the FAQ’s rates, 3 credits a PDF and 1 an image:

PlanPriceCredits a monthPDFs a monthImages a month
Plan 1$491,000about 3331,000
Plan 2$983,0001,0003,000
Plan 3$1475,000about 1,6665,000
Plan 4$1967,000about 2,3337,000

Plan 6$29411,000about 3,66611,000
Plan 7$34313,000about 4,33313,000

Notice the jump between Plan 1 and Plan 2: the second code adds 2,000 credits, and the Image Transformation API, for the same $49. Every code after that adds 2,000 more. If you’re likely to need more than about 333 PDFs a month, Plan 2 is the better buy per credit.

One-time prices on AppSumo; each plan is a number of stacked codes (1 to 7). A PDF uses 3 credits, an image 1. MarkupGo's own pricing page lists Lite at $29 a month (2,000 credits), Plus at $49 (10,000) and Pro at $99 (20,000), plus a free trial with 100 credits a month.

Picking a plan: three worked examples

Turns out the right plan is easy to find once you write down what you’ll actually generate in a typical month, so here are three honest sums.

A small invoicing app. It sends 600 invoices a month, each as a PDF. That’s 1,800 credits. Plan 1 falls short; Plan 2’s 3,000 leaves headroom for receipts and the odd re-send.

An online course. It issues 200 completion certificates a month as PDFs and makes 300 Open Graph images for blog posts. That’s 600 plus 300, or 900 credits. Plan 1 covers it, just. If enrolments double, you’re over.

An agency on Make. Eight clients, each with a monthly PDF report and twenty social images. That’s 24 credits for reports and 160 for images, only 184 credits. Credits aren’t the limit here; templates are. Eight clients with two templates each is 16, which rules out Plan 1’s 10 and points to Plan 2 or Plan 3.

If you’ve got real numbers from last month, use them. Guessing high is cheap here, because each extra code adds 2,000 credits for $49, but don’t forget that every code is a separate purchase you must redeem within 60 days.

Templates follow the same steps. Plan 1 holds 10, Plan 2 holds 30, and Plan 3 and above are unlimited. Agencies building a template per client will reach 10 quickly.

The deal vs MarkupGo’s own plans

MarkupGo’s pricing page lists three monthly plans, read on 29 October 2026:

  • Lite: $29 a month, 2,000 credits a month, 5 templates.
  • Plus: $49 a month, 10,000 credits a month, 30 templates.
  • Pro: $99 a month, 20,000 credits a month, unlimited templates.

All three include the Image Transformation API, custom domains, reports and activity logs. The page also offers 100 free credits a month on its free trial, which it says is “available forever but with limited features.”

Two comparisons fall out of that. First, the deal terms promise “All future Lite Plan updates,” and Lite gives 2,000 credits, more than Plan 1’s 1,000. Plan 1 is not Lite. Second, Plan 2 at $98 once gives 3,000 credits a month, more than Lite’s 2,000 at $29 a month, so it covers its cost in a little over three months against Lite. For heavy use, Plan 7’s 13,000 credits sit between Plus and Pro.

What buyers report

The listing shows 4.84 stars from 37 reviews. The AI summary of reviews mentions “the absence of direct PDF editing and occasional performance issues,” which is a fair note: MarkupGo creates PDFs, it doesn’t edit existing ones.

It fits automation stacks. A December 2025 review used it with Pabbly Connect and Activepieces and called the output “perfect.” Another, from November 2024, called it “a must have tool” for Make.com users, valuing control over PDF metadata.

Support answers. The same 2024 reviewer hit an API issue and said support was “very responsive.” The founder writes on the listing: “I read every review and support message myself.”

The learning curve. That reviewer asked for more tutorial videos with spoken explanations. A 2024 review noted that people creating only a few images “will shift design efforts to code efforts,” since templates are HTML.

The survival question. One early review titled itself “Insane Deal – if it lasts.” That was September 2024. In practice, the listing now shows more than 2,000 buyers and a founder still replying in 2026, which is the best evidence available.

The terms

The deal terms read:

  • “Lifetime access to MarkupGo.”
  • “You must redeem your code(s) within 60 days of purchase.”
  • “All future Lite Plan updates.”
  • “Stack up to 7 codes.”

The guarantee line reads “Not covered by We Got Your Back. Listed by the partner, not reviewed by AppSumo.” The 60-day refund still applies.

MarkupGo vs Bannerbear and Placid

The listing names Bannerbear and Placid. MarkupGo’s own FAQ draws the line: those tools “focus on image templates with a monthly subscription,” while MarkupGo “covers both images and PDFs” from HTML, URLs, Markdown and templates. That’s the honest split. When your work is mostly social images designed visually, a drag-and-drop image tool is easier. When you need PDFs from code, or full HTML and CSS control, MarkupGo is the closer fit.

Common mistakes with the MarkupGo deal

Reading credits as documents. A PDF is 3 credits. Divide by three before you choose a plan.

Buying Plan 1 for image transforms. The Image Transformation API starts at Plan 2.

Running out of templates. Plan 1 holds 10. If you’ve got a template per client, start at Plan 3.

Expecting a PDF editor. It generates PDFs. Don’t buy it to edit signed contracts or fill forms.

Skipping the free trial. MarkupGo offers 100 free credits a month. Test your hardest template first.

Forgetting the 60-day redemption rule. Redeem every code you buy straight away.

Who MarkupGo suits

A SaaS developer generating invoices. Plan 2 covers about 1,000 PDFs a month with the image API.

An automation agency on Make or n8n. Plan 3 for unlimited templates across clients.

A blogger who wants Open Graph images. Plan 1’s 1,000 images a month is plenty.

Someone who never wants to see HTML. The Magic Template URL helps, but templates are still HTML; a visual image tool may suit you better.

How to test it inside the refund window

  1. Redeem and run your real invoice template through the API.
  2. Check page breaks, fonts and headers on a long, multi-page document.
  3. Try the Magic Template URL from your automation tool.
  4. Watch the activity log to see credits used per task.
  5. Email the founder a question and note the reply time.

What we couldn’t check

We didn’t call the API, time conversions or test Office to PDF, which the listing marks as beta. We couldn’t see what happens when a month’s credits run out, or whether unused credits carry over; the FAQ says only that credits “renew every month.” Ask before day 60.

FAQ: MarkupGo questions

How do MarkupGo credits work?

The FAQ says each image conversion uses 1 credit and each PDF 3 credits. Credits renew monthly: 1,000 on Plan 1, up to 13,000 on Plan 7.

How many PDFs does the MarkupGo lifetime deal include?

About 333 a month on Plan 1 ($49), 1,000 on Plan 2 ($98), and about 4,333 on Plan 7 ($343).

Does MarkupGo store my data?

The FAQ says MarkupGo doesn’t store the HTML or data you send. Generated files stay in your account until you delete them or they expire.

Can MarkupGo be used without code?

Yes, through the template editor and the Magic Template URL, or HTTP steps in Zapier, Make and n8n.

The verdict

MarkupGo does one developer chore well: HTML, URLs and templates in, PDFs and images out, with no browser server to babysit. The deal is strong value once you price it in documents. Plan 1 suits light use, and Plan 2 is the sweet spot for most apps, adding the image API and three times the credits for another $49. Weigh the missing AppSumo guarantee and the Lite-plan update wording, and test your longest document before day 60.
