What Is Stacking on AppSumo? Codes, Tiers and Limits

Stacking means buying more than one code for the same AppSumo deal to reach a bigger plan. It only works on code deals the partner allows, and only while the deal is live.

What is stacking on AppSumo? It means buying more than one code for the same deal so that, together, they move you up to a higher plan or more features. Two gates decide whether you can do it: the deal must be code-based (licence deals are upgraded instead), and the partner must allow it, which the listing’s Deal Terms will say. You can stack at checkout or add codes later, but only while the deal is still on sale.

AppSumo’s own definition

AppSumo’s help article What is Stacking? (last updated 20 May 2026, read by us on 31 October 2026) puts it in one line: “‘Stack/stacking/stackable’ means you can buy multiple codes for the same product to unlock either a higher plan or more features for the plan offered.”

So one code buys an entry tier. Two codes buy the next one up. Each extra code moves you a rung higher, until you hit the ceiling the vendor set. That’s the whole mechanic. Everything else is about permission and timing.

Pricing tables make this visible. On a stackable deal, rows are usually named Plan 1, Plan 2, Plan 3, and the price climbs in even steps because each row is just a count of codes. When you see a table like that, you’re looking at a stack.

Gate one: only code-based deals stack

The same article opens with a warning: “stacking can only be done with code based products, licensing products need to be upgraded.”

AppSumo now sells two kinds of product. Code deals hand you a string to paste on the vendor’s site. Licence deals carry labels like “License Tier 1” and use an “Activate Now” button instead. AppSumo’s What is a license? page (last updated 22 May 2026) says “Unlike codes, licenses do not need to be stacked,” because you move between tiers with “Change plan” in your account.

If you’ve bought a licence and want more, you upgrade it. Buying a second licence won’t merge anything. Our guide on how AppSumo codes work explains both product types side by side.

Gate two: the partner has to allow it

This is the gate most people miss. AppSumo’s help page says that “stacking is currently available at the discretion of each partner.” It isn’t a platform-wide right. The vendor chooses.

Where do you find out? In the Deal Terms section of the listing. AppSumo’s note: “Not all deals are stackable; we’ll be sure to specify when a deal is stackable in the Deal Terms section of the deal page.” In practice that line reads something like “Stack up to 3 codes”, “Stack unlimited codes” or “This deal is not stackable”.

Still unsure after reading? AppSumo suggests using the Questions feature on the listing “to ask the Creator(s) directly”. Do that before paying, not after.

Which deals allow it? Examples from our reviews

We read 97 AppSumo listings on 29 October 2026 for our reviews. Stacking rules varied a lot. A few, quoted from the deal terms as we found them:

DealWhat the terms saidPrice per code
MarkupGo (PDF and image API)“Stack up to 7 codes”$49
BunnyDoc (e-signatures)“Stack up to 3 codes”$75
LeadRocks“Stack unlimited codes”$79
Deftform (forms)Not stackable$49 for one plan

Honestly, one listing showed why reading carefully pays. DivMagic’s terms said “This deal is not stackable”, yet its pricing table sold plans of 2 to 10 codes at $49 each. Two parts of one page disagreed. When that happens, ask the founder on the listing and screenshot the answer before buying.

A worked example: stacking MarkupGo

MarkupGo turns HTML, URLs and templates into PDFs and images through an API. On 29 October 2026 its AppSumo deal priced each code at $49, with up to seven stacking. Credits renew monthly, and a PDF costs 3 credits while an image costs 1.

CodesOne-time priceCredits a monthTemplates
1$491,000 (about 333 PDFs)10
2$983,000 (1,000 PDFs)30
3$1475,000Unlimited
7$34313,000 (about 4,333 PDFs)Unlimited

Notice the jump. Code one gives 1,000 credits; code two adds 2,000 more, and each code after that adds another 2,000. Plan 2 also adds the Image Transformation API, which Plan 1 lacked. So the second code is the most valuable one in the stack.

Now the test-drive route. AppSumo’s stacking page says: “You can also start with 1 code, take it for a test drive, and then buy + stack more codes later if you decide you want to unlock additional features (before it sells out).” Here’s how that might look:

  1. 31 October: buy one code for $49. Redeem it the same day, because the deal terms say “You must redeem your code(s) within 60 days of purchase.”
  2. First three weeks: run your real invoices or reports through it. Count how many PDFs a month you truly generate.
  3. Late November: usage runs near 333 PDFs, so add a second code for $49. You now hold Plan 2: $98 paid in total, 3,000 credits, 30 templates.
  4. Redeem the new code promptly on MarkupGo’s site, because it’s a separate purchase with its own 60-day redemption clock.

For comparison, MarkupGo’s own pricing page, as recorded in our review, listed its Lite plan at $29 a month for 2,000 credits. Two stacked codes at $98 cost about what three and a half months of Lite would, for more monthly credits. That’s the kind of payback sum worth doing before you add code three.

How many codes should you stack?

Start from the limit that hurts first, not from the biggest tier. Every stack has one ceiling that bites before the others: seats, monthly credits, templates, connected sites. Find yours, then buy the fewest codes that clear it with some headroom.

BunnyDoc shows how uneven those steps can be. On 29 October 2026 its three plans looked like this. One code ($75): a single user, one template, one public link, 500 signature requests a month and no payments. Two codes ($150): five users, five templates and public links, 1,000 requests a month, and payment collection up to $5,000 a month. Three codes ($225): ten users, ten templates and links, 1,500 requests, payments up to $15,000 a month, plus Slack.

A solo consultant sending forty contracts a month would barely dent Plan 1. A clinic with four front-desk staff needs Plan 2 on day one, purely for the seats. When you match the stack to a named bottleneck like that, the right number of codes is usually obvious.

Two quick checks help. First, compare the stack price with the vendor’s own monthly plan; each review in our PDF and docs tools section records the vendor’s own prices next to the AppSumo ones. Second, ask whether the bigger tier fixes a problem you have today or one you merely imagine having next year. Buying for an imagined future is how lifetime-deal folders fill up with idle accounts.

Don’t forget the time limit, either. Because extra codes can only be added while the deal is live, a cautious single-code start only works if you actually review your usage before the listing closes.

The limits of stacking

The deal must still be live. That bracketed “before it sells out” is the catch. Once a deal leaves the store, adding codes usually ends with it. Don’t plan to “stack later” without a date in your calendar.

Checkout caps quantity. AppSumo says: “We have quantity limits on all orders for security reasons.” Its example: “to bypass the 9-code limit at checkout, first buy 9, then any additional codes in another transaction.” Several listings we read offered plans up to 10 codes, such as DivMagic and LeadRocks, so a very large stack may need two orders. We didn’t run a checkout to test this.

The vendor’s ceiling is final. “Stack up to 3 codes” means three. A fourth code won’t raise BunnyDoc’s plan further.

Each code is its own item. “The number of codes you purchase = the number of product listings/codes you’ll have in your account.” Three codes mean three rows on your Products page, each with its own redemption details under Actions.

Refund timing isn’t spelled out for stacks. The stacking page doesn’t say how refund windows work when codes are bought on different days. AppSumo’s licence upgrade article treats an upgrade as a new purchase with “its own new 60-day refund window,” but that covers licences, not codes. Check each code’s date with “View invoice” on your Products page. Our AppSumo refund policy guide covers the general rules.

Common stacking mistakes

Assuming every deal stacks. If the terms don’t say so, treat it as not stackable.

Buying the top tier on day one. Skip the maximum stack until you’ve used one code for real work. You can climb later, if the deal is still running.

Forgetting to redeem extra codes. A second code sitting unredeemed on your Products page does nothing. Turns out that’s a common reason a plan “didn’t upgrade”.

Mixing up stacks and licences. Licences change tier with “Change plan”; codes stack. Different buttons, different rules.

Trusting the Q&A over the terms. Features mentioned only in Q&A aren’t part of the deal, according to AppSumo’s My Deal Terms Changed article.

FAQ: AppSumo stacking questions

Can you stack any AppSumo deal?

No. Stacking only works on code-based deals, and only when the partner allows it. The Deal Terms on the listing will say “stackable”, give a code limit, or say the deal isn’t stackable. Licence deals never stack; they’re upgraded.

Can I stack more codes after I’ve bought one?

Yes, if the deal allows stacking and is still on sale. AppSumo says you can start with one code, test it, then “buy + stack more codes later” before it sells out. Remember to redeem each new code on the vendor’s site.

How many AppSumo codes can I stack?

As many as the deal terms allow, from two up to “unlimited” on some listings. Separately, AppSumo caps quantity per order, so its help page suggests buying nine first and the rest in another transaction for big stacks.

How do I redeem stacked codes?

Each code appears as its own row on the Products page. Open the Actions dropdown for each one, find the code and redemption link, and apply it on the partner’s site, usually to the same account. If the plan doesn’t change, email the vendor with your codes and a screenshot.

The short version

  • Stacking means buying several codes for one deal to reach a higher plan.
  • It works only on code deals, and only when the partner allows it in the Deal Terms.
  • You can start with one code and add more later, but only before the deal sells out.
  • The second code often adds the most, as MarkupGo’s Plan 2 showed on 29 October 2026.
  • Redeem every code you add; an unredeemed code upgrades nothing.
