How do AppSumo codes work? You buy a deal on AppSumo, the code appears on the “Products” page of your AppSumo account, and you redeem it on the partner’s own website, not on AppSumo. The code is a key; the product lives somewhere else. Newer deals use licences instead, which you activate from that same page and can upgrade or downgrade rather than stack. If a code won’t redeem, check for a stray space first, then email the partner’s support team.

The one idea that explains everything
AppSumo is a marketplace. It sells access to software that another company, which it calls a partner, builds and runs. Its help article on codes says so directly: “The redemption process is hosted and handled on our partners’ sites” (Codes and Redemption Instructions, last updated 20 May 2026, read by us on 31 October 2026).
So every purchase has two halves. The buying half belongs to AppSumo: payment, invoice, refund window. The using half belongs to the partner: your login, your plan limits, bug fixes, support for the tool itself. Nearly all confusion about codes comes from blending those two. Know which half a problem sits in and you know whom to email.
AppSumo’s Expired Deals page frames it as a voucher: “Think of an AppSumo code you receive as a coupon.” The marketplace can’t hand you the software. It hands you something the vendor agrees to accept.
Step 1: buying a tier
Every listing has a pricing table. On a code-based deal, each row is normally a count of codes: Plan 1 is one, Plan 2 is two, and so on. On a licence-based deal, rows carry labels like “License Tier 1” and “License Tier 2”.
Read the Deal Terms box before paying. It holds the redemption deadline, the refund window, the update promise and the stacking rule. In practice, those four lines matter more than any feature list, because they decide what you can still do a month later.
Here’s a real case. On 29 October 2026 we read the BunnyDoc listing, an e-signature tool. Its terms said “You must redeem your code(s) within 60 days of purchase” and “Stack up to 3 codes”. One code cost $75, two cost $150, three cost $225, all paid once. The page showed a 60-day refund window and carried this warning: “Not covered by We Got Your Back. Listed by the partner, not reviewed by AppSumo.”
Step 2: finding your code (the Products page)
You don’t need to dig through email. AppSumo’s help center gives the route:
- Go to AppSumo and select “Products” from the navigation bar at the top.
- Find the deal in your list.
- Open the “Actions” dropdown to its right and pick “Redemption information”.
That screen shows the code itself, the activation link and the vendor’s own instructions. Further down sits a “Need Help?” section with the partner’s support address, according to AppSumo’s Product support article.
Two details most people miss. First, buying several codes of one deal gives you several separate rows, so three BunnyDoc codes mean three entries. Second, a “Filter:” dropdown sorts purchases into Active, Not Redeemed and Refunded. That “Not Redeemed” view is the fastest way to catch something you forgot.
AppSumo can’t see whether you’ve redeemed anything. It offers a “Mark as Redeemed” toggle so you can keep your own record. Use it. One click now saves an afternoon of guessing later.
A tiny inconsistency, for the record: the codes article calls that menu item “Redemption information”, while What is Stacking? calls it “Redemption instructions”. Same place, two names.
Step 3: redeeming on the partner’s site
Click the link and you land on the vendor’s website. Typically you create an account there, or sign in, then paste the code into a field. Screens vary wildly, because each team designs its own flow.
Your email address matters more than it looks. AppSumo’s licence activation article says the address you enter “will be the email address associated with your account on our partner’s site.” It warns that if you already hold an account there, “even if it’s a trial/free account,” you’ll need another address, since one email can’t own two accounts (How do I activate my license?, last updated 22 May 2026). That page covers licences, but the same clash crops up with codes. Changing it afterwards is the vendor’s call, not yours.
Some deals add conditions of their own. Our GSpeech review, checked on 29 October 2026, quotes a deal that is “Only for new GSpeech users who do not have existing accounts.” If you’ve tried a tool’s free plan before, read lines like that twice.
Don’t forget the clock. Plenty of deal terms set one, like BunnyDoc’s 60 days. AppSumo is blunt about stragglers: “AppSumo is not responsible for assisting with late redemption or activation requests of products.” Our guide on what to do when an AppSumo code has expired covers what’s left once you’ve missed it.
Codes vs licences: what’s the difference?
AppSumo now sells two kinds of product, and its help center treats them differently.
| Code-based deal | Licence-based deal | |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing table | Plan 1, Plan 2 (a number of codes) | “License Tier 1”, “License Tier 2” |
| How you redeem | Paste a code on the partner’s site | Click “Activate Now” from Redemption information |
| Getting a bigger plan | Buy more codes and stack them, if allowed | “Change plan” to upgrade a tier |
| Going smaller | Refund individual codes within the window | Downgrade within the days on the deal page |
AppSumo calls licences “our easier to use alternative to codes” and adds: “Unlike codes, licenses do not need to be stacked” (What is a license?, last updated 22 May 2026). To activate one, open Redemption information, or the “Activate now” link in the status column, and press the yellow “Activate Now” button.
Changing a tier happens through “Change plan” in the Actions dropdown, per the upgrading and downgrading article (last updated 21 September 2026). Two rules there are easy to overlook. After a deal sells out, “you will only see the option to downgrade.” And an upgrade counts as a fresh purchase with “its own new 60-day refund window,” whereas “A downgrade does not restart your refund window.”
GSpeech is a licence deal. On 29 October 2026 its tiers ran from License Tier 1 at $69 up to License Tier 5 at $1,299, with no codes and no stacking. Want more websites after buying Tier 1? You’d upgrade, not buy a second licence.
Codes behave otherwise. You climb tiers by adding extra codes, and only where the terms allow it. Our explainer, what is stacking on AppSumo, walks through that with real numbers.
A worked example: one BunnyDoc code, start to finish
Here’s the timeline for a single code, using BunnyDoc’s terms as we read them on 29 October 2026. Say you paid $75 for one code on 31 October 2026.
- Day 0, 31 October: the code shows up under Products. Open Actions, then Redemption information, copy it and follow the link.
- Same afternoon: redeem with an email that isn’t tied to any older BunnyDoc account. Tick “Mark as Redeemed”.
- Weeks one and two: send genuine contracts for signature. Plan 1 allowed 500 signature requests a month, one user, one template and one public link, so push against those ceilings.
- 30 December 2026: day 60. Both the redemption deadline and the refund window end here.
Honestly, having both deadlines land together is a trap. Redeem in week eight and you’ve left yourself almost no testing time before refunds close. AppSumo’s refund policy (last updated 31 August 2026) adds that “unredeemed or unused tools cannot be refunded outside our refund window.” An untouched code isn’t a safety net. It’s just money parked.
What to do if redemption fails
Most failures turn out to be small. Work down this list.
1. Look for a stray space. AppSumo’s Invalid Codes page (last updated 20 May 2026) says: “Sometimes the error exists because a space is entered to the right or left of the code when copying it and pasting it into the redemption field.” Paste into a plain notepad first, trim, then copy again.
2. Confirm the site and the account. Use the link shown under Products, not a bookmark. Signed in to some old free account on that vendor’s site? Sign out, then follow the link fresh.
3. Compare dates. Check today against the deadline in the deal terms. Past it? The code may simply have lapsed.
4. Email the partner, not AppSumo. The Invalid Codes page asks you to “email the Partner’s support team with the product name and code” and to “include a screenshot of the code error you’re seeing.” Their address sits under “Need Help?”.
5. Escalate only when the vendor goes quiet. AppSumo’s Contacting Partners article routes redemption trouble, login problems and how-to questions to partners, and marketplace matters to support@appsumo.com. It also asks buyers to keep to “a single channel”, because pinging someone by email, chat and social media at once slows everything. Many vendors are tiny teams; a reply can take a few business days.
Common mistakes with AppSumo codes
Buying and parking. Deadlines start when you pay, not when you redeem.
Picking the wrong email. An old free account on that tool can swallow the redemption or block it.
Expecting AppSumo to fix bugs. Logins, data and features belong to the vendor.
Assuming every deal stacks. Only some code deals do. Licences never do.
Skimming the terms. Skip the feature list if you must, but read those four Deal Terms lines. They tell you more than any screenshot.
FAQ: AppSumo code questions
Where do I find my AppSumo code?
On the “Products” page of your AppSumo account. Open the “Actions” dropdown beside the deal and select “Redemption information” to see the code, the link and the instructions. Bought several codes of one deal? Each gets its own row.
Do I redeem my AppSumo code on AppSumo?
No. You redeem it on the partner’s website, through the link in Redemption information. AppSumo’s help center says redemption is “hosted and handled on our partners’ sites,” which is also why it can’t tell whether you’ve finished.
What’s the difference between an AppSumo code and a licence?
A code gets pasted on the vendor’s site and, on some deals, can be stacked with more codes for a bigger plan. A licence is activated with an “Activate Now” button and can’t be stacked. You move between tiers with “Change plan” instead.
Why does AppSumo say my code is invalid?
Often it’s a space before or after the code, picked up while copying, according to AppSumo’s Invalid Codes page. If that’s not it, email the partner with the product name, the code and a screenshot. Also check whether the redemption deadline has passed.
The short version
- You buy on AppSumo; you redeem on the partner’s website.
- Your code lives under Products, then Actions, then Redemption information.
- Licence deals use “Activate Now” and “Change plan” instead of codes and stacking.
- Redeem the day you buy, since the deadline and refund window both start at checkout.
- When redemption fails, check for a stray space, then email the vendor with a screenshot.
